About the sense of Duty

Their last talk. The scene takes place on an Irish harbor. Eveline is talking to her boyfriend, Frank.

"Why don't you come Eveline? What's the matter? he said.
- I don't know what to do. I am facing a dilemma : on the one hand, I want to go away with you, to escape from that gloomy and deadly atmosphere. On the other hand, I promised my mother not to leave... I am torn beteween my yearning for escapism and my sense of duty, she answered.
- How incredible is it ! Don't you love me?
- Stop it Frank! I don't want to feel guilty because of you. I have to make a decision, it's really hard...
- But we spent carefree moments, didn't we? We were always laughing, everything was so easy with you. I believed you were interested in listening to my stories. Did you were lying? You must fulfil yourself! Forget your mean father, he is too nasty to you! he replied painfully.
- I am so sorry Frank! He is my father, he is alone, and I couldn't live freely knowing that! I must follow my religion, even if I badly want to come with you, she said crying.
- Please don't cry, and look at me. What do you see? A man loving you, with whom you'll go to Buenos Ayres to discover a life made of entertainments and freedoms!
- You don't owe your father anything!
- Not sure...
- No Eveline. This is the only thing you have to consider. He harassed you, he was nasty, unkind, mean. You told me you were fed up with being humiliated, and you were right!
- I do agree with you, but it's not the problem. Why should I follow you and leave him alone? It's so selfish!"
The bell rang. Eveline knew she had to make a decision very quickly. She wanted God to help her.
"I am sorry Frank, I can't..." she tried to say.
